Istanbul Quick Guides

Istanbul is unique. Situated between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, lies the only city in the world on two continents. Only the Bosphorus separates the European side from the Asian side. With more than 10 million inhabitants, it ranks among the largest cities in the world, the total area of the Istanbul province is 5200 square kilometres. The big city on the Bosporus unites ancient history and modernity. Istanbul is a cultural metropolis and economic centre at the same time. Magnificent mosques and historical buildings such as the vast palace of the sultan, which bears witness to the glorious past of the Ottoman Empire, characterise the the districts of Sultanahmet, Beyazit and Eminonu in the historic quarter in the south of the Golden Horn. Numerous museums offer visitors a comprehensive insight into the ancient and recent history of the city.

For a taste of modern Istanbul, visit the districts of Beyoglu and Taksim. This is where you’ll find the Istiklal Caddesi, the main shopping street and a popular centre for events, where Istanbul can barely be distinguished from a western city. By day, visitors will appreciate the wide selection of boutiques and department stores. In the evening, the “road of independence” awaits, with its restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs where you can celebrate into the early morning hours. Istanbul is a multifaceted city, whoever visits once will keep coming back.
