You are now entering the neighbourhood of Balat. For centuries, this quarter has been the primary home for Istanbul’s Jewish population, whose roots stretch back to the Byzantine Empire. A fresh wave of Sephardic immigrants came from Spain in 1492 under invitation from Sultan Beyazit II following the expulsion of Jews from Spain. The population flourished as Istanbul’s Jewish community excelled in trade and diplomacy. There is still a small Jewish population remaining here and a few who can speak the ancient Ladino language.
