Beyazit Mosque - Istanbul - Turkey

Beyazit Mosque Quick Guide

Beyazit Mosque, Beyazit Camii

Built in 1506 for Sultan Beyazit II who was the son of Mehmet the Conqueror, this was the second imperial mosque complex to be built in Istanbul following the Conquest and the construction of the Mehmet ll’s massive complex at Fatih. The mosque itself marks the beginning of an era of distinctive Ottoman classical style: notice how the shape of the building very much resembles a pared-down version of the Haghia Sophia. Also part of the complex here are a medrese, a soup kitchen, a hamam, a hospice and a primary school.
