Bulgarian St. Stephen Church

Bulgarian St. Stephen Church Quick Guide

Church of St Stephen of the Bulgars, Bulgar Kilisesi

This neo-gothic, neo-baroque church building is like any other except for one detail: it is entirely made from cast iron. Following a trend in the 19th century for transporting cast iron structures around the world, this church, which was intended as a place of worship for the Bulgarian Orthodox community, was cast in Vienna and transported down the Danube and into the Black Sea in pieces weighing 500 tons each. The church was finally assembled in 1898.
