Eyup Sultan Mosque

Eyup Sultan Mosque Quick Guide

The mosque here at Eyüp, built in 1800, is the third holiest site of pilgrimage in Islam after Mecca and Jerusalem. The reason for this is that the mosque contains the tomb of Eyüp al-Ansari, who was the Prophet Mohammed’s standard-bearer and friend. The original complex was built by Mehmet II just five years after he conquered the city, and it was ordained the official place for coronation of new sultans. It was on this spot that they were girded with the original sword of Osman, the patriarch of the Ottoman line.
