İstanbul Üniversitesi, Beyazit Meydanı
The large Moorish gateway ahead is the entrance to the grounds of the Istanbul University, which contains the main campus building, housed in what used to be the office for the ministry of war. To the right of the gate, you can see the Beyazit Tower, built in 1828 as a lookout post for fires in the city. The University itself evolved from a long line of educational institutions that date back to the first medreses, or religious schools, founded by Fatih Mehmet the Conqueror. It is now home to almost 75,000 students and staff.
