Prison of Anemas

Prison of Anemas Quick Guide

-Anemas Zindanları- Walk out to the back fence of this humble outdoor cafe and you will glimpse part of the continuing restorations works on the Anemas dungeons. This Byzantine prison was used to incarcerate various enemies of the state, including deposed emperors, six of whom were held and tortured here. Two were even murdered. The name Anemas comes from the prison’s first occupant, Michael Anemas, a general who attempted an unsuccessful revolt against Emperor Alexios Komnenos in 1106.
