Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Camii - Istanbul / Turkey

Sokollu Mehmet Paşa Mosque Quick Guide

Sokollu Mehmet Paşa Mosque – Istanbul

This small mosque is one of the most attractive small mosques made by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. It was build in 1572 for Asmahan Sultan, a daughter of Sultan Selim II and the wife of Vizier Sokollu Mehmet Paşa. Some parts of the building are thought to have been taken from a church which used to stand at the same site. The small cells in the courtyard of the mosque housed scholars who all had their own window, fireplace and niche for books. The craftsmanship of the carvings and tiles in the mosque is very fine.
