The Cibal Gate, Cibali

The Cibal Gate, Cibali Quick Guide

The Cibal Gate, Cibal Kapı, Cibali

Prior to the Turkish conquest of Constantinople, the city was protected for centuries by fortified walls that encircled it on all sides. Most of the walls were destroyed during the Ottoman seige on the city, but parts of their remnants can still be seen here along the Golden Horn. This gate, one of only two surviving ones on this stretch of the Golden Horn, provided an entry into the city through the single line of 10 metre-high fortifications. The gate was breached on 29th May 1453 by the warrior Cebe Ali, after whom the quarter is now named.
