Here you are looking at one of the best-preserved sections of the Walls of Theodesius that were erected in the first half of the 5th century. The walls functioned in three parts: the inner wall, which you see before you, was 5 metres thick and stood at a height of 12 metres. The wall was studded by watchtowers placed at regular intervals. There followed an outer wall that was shorter and less thick, and finally a moat, which would have been 10 metres deep, 20 metres wide, and subject to flooding in times of danger.
