The second courtyard of the Eyüp mosque contains the entrance to the tomb of Eyüp al-Ansari (Eyüp Sultan Türbesi), the Prophet’s standard-bearer who was killed while leading the Arab armies on a siege of Constantinople in the 670s. Although this mosque was raised around the martyr’s tomb by Sultan Fatih Mehmet, it is known that the tomb itself existed as a place of respect prior to the arrival of Muslims in Constantinople. Devotees here either queue to enter the tomb, or stand outside the its beautifully tiled walls and pray.
