The Tombs of Süleyman and Haseki Hürrem

The Tombs of Süleyman and Haseki Hürrem Quick Guide

The Tombs of Süleyman and Haseki Hürrem, Süleyman Türbesi- Haseki Hürrem Türbesi

Located in this garden behind the mosque are the tombs of Süleyman the Magnificent and his wife, Haseki Hürrem, also known as Roxelana, a name which referred to her Slavic origins. The daughter of an Ukrainian Priest, Hürrem was captured in her early 20s and selected for the Sultan’s harem where she caught Süleyman’s eye and fast became his favourite. The infatuated Süleyman then broke with two centuries of tradition by freeing Hürrem from slavery and making her his wife. They had five children together and when Hürrem died in 1558, the sultan was said to be inconsolable. The two are buried here, Süleyman in the large octagonal türbe and his beloved Roxelana in the smaller one.
