Yildiz Hamam Quick Guide

Yildiz Hamam – Istanbul

A man nicknamed Yildiz Dede was the astrologer at the court of Sultan Mehmet II. Yildiz means star in Turkish and Dede means grandfather. He became famous after predicting the fall of Constantinople. According to legend he build his hamam on the site of an ancient synagogue, probably of Karaite Jews who lived in this area until 1660 when they were moved to Hasköy up the Golden Horn due to the redevelopment of the area for the reconstruction of the New Mosque. For this reason the hamam also used to be known as the Bath of the Jews.
