The House of the Virgin Mary Overview
The House of the Virgin Mary, 9 km from Selçuk, on in Nightingale Mountain (400 m). It is a significant place for Christian pilgrims.
Tradition states that the Virgin Mary, who came here with St. John after Christ’s death, spent her last years in this house. A chapel was built near the house in the 4th century. The buildings have been recognized as a shrine by the Pope and restored recently. The back of the rectangular shaped house is octagonal. The bronze statue of the Virgin Mary was found here.
The annual celebration of the Panegyri of the Assumption of Mary, held on August 15, dates back to the early 1800s.
