Cemberlitas Hamami Bath - Istanbul, Turkey

Cemberlitas Bath (Hamam)

This bath is on Divanyolu, near the monument of Dikilitaş. It was built in 1584 by Sultan Murat III’s mother, Nurbanu Sultan, to procure income for the Atik Valide Mosque and complex in Uskudar. The architect for the bath was Mimar Sinan. It was built as a double bath, one section for men,the other for women. However, during the reign of Sultan Abdiilaziz (1861-1876) part of the women’s section was destroyed while the road was being widened. Therefore, only the men’s section is in use today.
